Back in the 1950s, the Iowa Coash family would spend many summers visiting our Kansas family. The highlight of the trip for my brother Jack and me was visiting Gardners. We would pair up with Pat and Greg to be, in our minds, The Fearsome Foursome of the world.
Luckily for Jack and me, Pat and Greg shared our thrill of pushing the envelope with our parents, involving fireworks, running around the neighborhood past curfew, and yes, experimenting with cigarettes! We felt we were just as criminal as John Dillinger in these activities!
Well, Uncle Ray and my dad Mel were always one step ahead of us. We ALWAYS got caught. And it was like getting sent to Alcatraz for us when our punishment was meted out by Mel and Ray.
Aunt Dorothy, however, could always be counted on for a kind word and a loving look to soothe our troubled souls! She never ever piled on with criticism or disproving looks. She conveyed the sense to us, "Hang in there, boys, this too will pass."
What a wonderful woman God gave us in Dorothy. She is missed.
