Dorothy Maxine Underwood, 93, of Atchison, KS died on Friday, February 15, 2019 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, Feb. 19th, 2019 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Broxterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Monday, Feb. 18th, 2019 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Mt. Vernon Cemetery and may be left in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Dorothy was born on April 15, 1925 in Effingham, KS the daughter of Clyde and Daisy (Hitchner) Shell. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1943. Dorothy was a cook for the American Legion and Lenora’s Café before working as a bus driver for over 14 years for USD # 409. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary, a member of the Kansas Retired School Personnel and enjoyed bowling, dancing, gardening and going to the casino. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was married to Clyde Underwood on April 27, 1946. Mr. Underwood preceded her in death on March 15, 2005. Survivors include three sons, James (Mechelle) Underwood, Michael Underwood, and John (Mario) Underwood, all of Atchison, and two daughters, Linda Underwood, and Barbara (Rodney) Griffin, both of Atchison, KS, a daughter in-law, Melinda Underwood, Atchison, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Her parents, husband, a son Richard Underwood, three brothers, Chet, Merle, and Roland Shell, and one sister, Laura Leonard, and a grandson, Kurtis Griffin preceded her in death.
