Sondra “Sandy” May (Carter) Haeffele, 73, of Overbrook, KS, formerly of Hiawatha and Atchison, KS, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS surrounded by her family.

Sondra “Sandy” May Carter was born on September 2, 1944 in Atchison, the daughter of Clifford and Emmaciel ‘Emmy’ (Ellis) Carter. Sandy graduated from Atchison High School in 1962. She worked many occupations throughout her life but being a homemaker, mother, cake decorator, and babysitter were her most cherished. Sandy enjoyed baking, fishing, and bowling and was a coach for the youth bowling league at Maple Lanes in Hiawatha for many years. Sandy and her daughter, Cherie, were Kansas State Champion Bowlers in Doubles in the mid 1980’s.

Sandy and Darrel W. Haeffele were united in marriage on January 16, 1966 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Atchison, he survives.

Also surviving are their three children, Cherie (Robert) Herlinger of Overbrook, KS, Traci (Calvin) Weibling of East Lynne, MO, and Michael (Michelle) Haeffele of Ottawa, KS; five grandchildren, Amanda (Ryan) Kohlman of Burlingame, KS, Andrew (Brittany) Weibling of Garden City, MO, Jessica Herlinger of Lawrence, KS, Mackenzie Haeffele of Winfield, KS, and Jacob (Samantha) Weibling of Kingsville, MO; eight great-grandchildren; step brother, Jim Halling; step sisters, Betty Diebolt and Susan Smith; and many former daycare children who called her Grandma Sandy.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; two great-grandsons, Gavin and Gabriel; brother, Wayne Carter; and sisters, Patricia Cloves and Florence Spencer.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, 800 Kansas Avenue, Atchison, KS with Chaplain Larry Parrish, officiating. Family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions in memory of Sandy to the ASPCA or Trinity Lutheran School and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
