Robert Lewis “Bob” Thompson, 89, of Atchison KS died on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at the Atchison Medicalodge.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Friday, Nov. 24th, at the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home, with Rev. Matt Broxterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 am on Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Atchison Humane Society and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Bob was born August 25,1928 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Jean and Bertha (Wohlgemuth)Thompson. He attended Franklin grade school and graduated from Atchison High school in 1946, he lettered in football, ran track and played church league basketball, hunted rabbits and squirrels. After high school graduation, Bob and Curtis Lash hitch hiked to Colorado for the summer. After returning to Atchison, he and several class mates joined the Army together and served two years in occupied Japan. Upon returning to Kansas, Bob attended a two-year engineering school in Kansas City and then was employed by General Motors. He met Freda B Hicks in the early 1950’s and they were married June 4, 1951. They are parents of two children Shelly Swendson of Effingham and Steve Thompson, Fort Worth, TX. Bob ran the Conoco gas station at the corner of Sixth and Kansas from 1953 to 1964. He later worked for the Heklinkamper Bottling Company in Atchison. In the late 60’s Bob purchased the Burkhart Exterminating company, he and Freda ran that as Atchison Pest Control until his retirement in 1994. Bob then trained himself as an Archeological technician and worked throughout the United States on private and government projects. Bob was a avid camper all his adult life, he built and owned several campers, and along with Freda, traveled to most of the states. Bob was extremely proud of his granddaughters, Lana, Jodi, Jenni and Katie. He survived by Freda Thompson of the home, daughter Shelly and Tom Swendson, Effingham, granddaughter Lana and Caleb Barkman, great-granddaughter Madilynn, Circleville, KS., granddaughter Jodi Swendson, Manhattan, son Steve and Cindy Thompson, Fort Worth, TX., granddaughter Jenni and Eric Neal, great-granddaughter Adelaide, Durango, CO., and Katie and Hugh Ferguson, great-grandson Little Hugh V, Denver, CO. Bob preceded in death by his parents, older brother James, Jimmy, Thompson, and Mildred Jean, Bea, Lipp. Sister Louise Ellen, Tiny, Kibler and brother Alfred, Sonny, Thompson survive in Atchison.
