Obituary for Virginia Anna Zabel

Virginia Anna Zabel, 89, of Atchison, Kansas went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 16, 2016.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS, with Rev. Robert Ziegler, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 9:30 AM until time of service at the church. Memorial contributions in memory of Virginia are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran School Technology Endowment Fund and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Virginia was born June 8, 1926 at the family home in Atchison, the daughter of Ernest and Louise (Yost) Zabel. She attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School; Atchison High School; St. John’s (Lutheran) College, Winfield, KS; and graduated from Kansas University in Lawrence, KS, with a dual degree in Spanish and English. Virginia taught school at the Atchison County Orphan’s Home for a few years before joining the family business, Zabel Grocery, where she worked along with her brother, Carl (Buddy), until she retired and they closed the store in 1991. Virginia was a life member of Trinity Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School for many years, member of the Priscilla Guild, and attended the Morning Break Bible Study group.

Virginia is survived by Richard “Pete” Cordero, Atchison, a family friend of 70 years and often referred as another brother; nephew, Walter (Wally) Reder, West Point, Utah; nieces, Diana Reder Hobbs (Ernie), Manassas, VA, Carol Reder Gregg (Thomas), Effingham, KS, Nancy Reder Young (Kenneth), Effingham; 8 great nephews and nieces and 15 great-great nephews and nieces.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Corinne Zabel Reder (2011); brothers, Richard Zabel (1986) and Carl Zabel (2007).
