She graduated from Northwest Missouri State Teacher's College in 1934 and started teaching in Andrew County, Missouri. Margaret taught at various elementary schools in Kansas and Missouri for 30 years, retiring in 1973. Margaret and Courtney McConnell were married in 1941 in Emporia, Kansas.

Margaret was a long-time member of the Methodist Church and contributed to many of the church activities. She also volunteered at the Atchison Public Library for 22 years and was honored to receive the Volunteer of 2003 Award from the Northeast Kansas Library System. In recognition of her volunteer services the library nominated her as Mrs. Atchison in 2004. She was a lifetime member of Friends of the Library, and Retired Teachers Association.
She was an avid follower of her beloved Kansas Jayhawks Men's Basketball team, and cherished the letter from Coach Bill Self she received on the occasion of her 100th birthday. Margaret's hobbies included reading, bridge, hand-work, and word puzzles.

Margaret is survived by her four children: John (Barbara) of Amarillo, Texas; Steve (Susan) of Aurora, Colorado; Mary (Terry) Gerkovich of Prairie Village, Kansas; and, Dan (DeAnna Hine) of Kansas City, Missouri. Through her children and their spouses, her family extends to many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great, great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a large circle of friends throughout the community and from her last years living at Vintage Park at Atchison.
