Obituary for Lena Maxine Smith (Black)

Lena Maxine Smith, 88, of Rushville, MO passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family.

Funeral service will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, October 20, 2018 at the Sugar Creek Christian Church, Rushville, MO, with Rev. Keith Hoover officiating. Burial will follow at Sugar Creek Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, October 19, 2018 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Maxine was born June 20, 1930 in Rushville, MO, the daughter of James Fly and Lena Pearl (Cox) Black. She was a Postmaster for the Rushville Post office. Maxine was a member of the Sugar Creek Christian Church and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed cooking, reading and was a competitive card player, especially rummy, those who played against her knew to watch for flying cards if she wasn’t winning.

Lena Maxine married Rev. Harold Wayne Smith on July 30, 1948 at the Rushville Christian Church. He preceded her in death on May 7, 2007. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Jean Sullivan and John KempVanEe, Clovis, CA, and Diane Maxine and Wally Riggs, Rushville, MO, five grandchildren, Tanya (Gary) Blanks, Talby Sullivan, Levon Holland, Paul Brent (Brielle) Riggs, Blair (Josh) Cornelius, three great grandchildren, Rayna Downing, Kordell Downing and Danny Holland, three step-grandchildren, and seven step-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers, JD, Hudson, William, Ed, Roy, Chet, Ernest and Howard Black, two sisters, Virginia Griffin and Anna Renfro.
