Joseph  John "Joe"  Smith, Jr.
Joseph John Smith, Jr., 92 of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Atchison, KS with Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB as Celebrant and Father Norbert Schappler, OSB, as concelebrant. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. A parish rosary will be recited on Monday, May 22, 2017, with visitation with the family following until 8:00 PM at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorials are suggested to St. Benedict Catholic Church or American Heart Association and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.

Joe was born on May 1, 1925 in Atchison KS, the son of Joseph J. Sr., and Mary M. (Ruhlman) Smith. He attended St. Benedict grade school. Joseph was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #723 of Atchison. He enjoyed his family, golfing and gardening.

Joseph married Marcella Hawk on August 10, 1968 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son Joseph E. and Jo Beighley-Smith, Independence, MO, a daughter Kristina and Ken Selby, Grandview, MO, a sister Margaret “Marge” McGinnis, Atchison, KS, four grandchildren, Ian Selby, Adam, Nicholas, Andrew Beighley and lots of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Paul and Robert Smith and two sisters Loretto Smith, Justina Catherine “Kate” Smith.
