Obituary for Clarence Robert Flory

Clarence Robert Flory, 93, of Valley Falls, KS, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Midland Care at Linnwood Park, Valley Falls, KS.

Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery Effingham, KS. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, March 17, 2017 at the Church. Clarence will lay in state at the O’Trimble Funeral Home from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Friday. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church or Jefferson County Hospice and may be sent in care of the O’Trimble Funeral Home, who is handling the arrangements. Clarence was born on November 29, 1923 in Monrovia, KS, the son of Edwin and Kathleen (Whitson) Flory. He attended Valley Falls High School his freshman year and graduated from ACCHS in 1941. Clarence was a member of Nortonville Pleasant Grove Christian Church, Nortonville, KS, where he had served as Chairman of the church board and supervised the construction of the church in 1980, past Sunday school Superintendant, Elder and High School Sunday school teacher for Nortonville and Effingham. He also served on Pleasant Grove cemetery board, was a past president and member of Atchison County Farm Bureau and was the treasurer for the Nortonville Development which built Village Villa Nursing Home. Clarence enjoyed traveling having been to all fifty states, driving to forty-nine of them, he also traveled to Canada, Mexico, Italy and Brazil, visiting friends all along the way. He attended three World Fairs. Clarence enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing chess, checkers, and cards; anything with his kids and grandchildren.

Clarence married Lou Ida White on September 2, 1945 in Effingham, KS; she preceded him in death on January 11, 2015. Survivors include four sons; Bob and Leota Flory, Atchison, KS, Sam Flory, Effingham, KS, Tom and Jeannine Flory, Nortonville, KS, Dan and Linda Flory, Joplin, MO, and a daughter, Ethel and Paul Dunlap, Effingham, KS, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, a daughter in law, Karen Flory, five brothers and one sister.
