Van Hurst, 92, died on January 3, 2017, at his home in Atchison. Van was born on May 16, 1924, in Rushville, Missouri, the son of Clifton and Agnes (Van Hoozer) Hurst.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at the First Christian Church with Rev. Matt Broxterman and Rev. Bob Turpin officiating. Burial will follow in the Armstrong Cemetery, Rushville, Missouri. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church of Atchison, the Rushville Christian Church, or the YMCA, and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Van attended school in Rushville and graduated from Rushville High School in 1942. He was a WWII Veteran having served in the United States Army from 1943 – 1946. Van attended the University of Missouri, and St. Joseph Junior College, before graduating from the University of Nebraska with a B.S. and a Masters in Education. Van taught at Rushville and DeKalb Missouri, before moving to Atchison. Van was the Principal at Martin East, Martin West, Central, Franklin elementary schools, and Atchison High School.

Van was a member of the Rushville Christian Church, First Christian Church of Atchison, the Atchison Lions Club, American Legion Post #6, VFW Post #1175, the Salvation Army Board of Directors, the Retired Teachers Association, and the YMCA Board of Directors. Van enjoyed fishing, spending time at Sugar Lake, reading, sports, coffee club and his card club.

Van was married to Geraldine “Jeri” Fuller on June 5, 1948, in St. Joseph, Missouri. She preceded him in death in 1993. He married Vera Ellerman Rodecap in Nortonville, Kansas. She preceded him in death in 2013.

Van is survived by his children Paula Hurst of Golden, Colorado; Van “Corky” Hurst of Atchison; Ellen Mitchell and Jeri Ann Baker of Salina, Kansas. Van’s grandchildren, Libby (Chuck Teafatiller) of Parker, Colorado; Shane (Megan Jeffreys) of Golden, Colorado; Allison (Andrew) Johns of Westminster, Colorado; Austin Baker of Salina; Dakota Baker of Lawrence, Kansas; and Mariah Baker of Lawrence, Kansas. His great grandchildren are Dylan and Zachary Teafatiller, Micah and Sage Long, and Landon and Aiden Johns.

Van’s family includes Jerri (Tim) Fried of Topeka, Kansas; Lisa (Dave) Hill of Tyler, Texas; Roger “Rocky” Rodecap of Cummings; Christen (Matt), Mya and Will Lacy of Atchison, Jaclyn (Zac), Reagan and Rylee West of Manhattan; Kendra Rodecap of Lawrence; Presley Rodecap of Manhattan; Katie (Carey), Hudson and Caroline Clover of Tyler, Texas and Andrew Hill of Portland, Oregon.

Van was preceded in death by a brother, Allison Hurst. Van was a kind and generous man. He touched many lives in a positive way and left a legacy of educational impact.
