George Richard Scholz, 97 of Effingham, KS passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at the Atchison Hospital, Atchison, KS.

Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 31, 2016, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS, with Pastor Jeff Cochran officiating. Burial will follow at the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, KS. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 to 11:00 AM, at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Town & Country Senior Center Effingham, KS or Lancaster United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. George was born on April 22, 1919 in Huron, KS, the son of Robert and Rose (Manthe) Scholz. He graduated from Huron High School. George was a farmer but had worked at different places throughout his life, such as, Berry Hatchery, Blish-Mize, Paige Airways Caves and Lancaster CO-OP Lumber yard. He was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church, where he served on several boards, along with being a 4-H leader. George enjoyed, golf, visiting with people and playing cards and the Atchison County fair, where he was involved with the sheep contest. He especially loved his children and grandchildren.

George married Frances R. Elam on January 23, 1942; she preceded him in death on October 12, 2013. Survivors include two sons; Glenn and Marilyn Scholz, Falls City, NE, Robert and Sarah Scholz, St. Peter’s, MO, a daughter; Rita and Jerry Eckert, Effingham, KS, ten grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a daughter; Rebecca Scholz, two brothers; Ivan and Chester Scholz and a sister Ruby Smith.
