Bettye Luella Palmer, 85, formerly of Atchison, KS died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2016 at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence KS.

Graveside services and burial of cremated remains will be 3:00 pm on Wednesday, Nov. 9th 2016 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison KS. Visitation with family from 1:00 to 2:00 pm on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, 2016 at the Atchison United Methodist Church. A Memorial service will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lewis Palmer Scholarship Fund, at Pittsburg State University and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. Bettye was born on Oct. 13, 1931 in San Angelo, TX the daughter of Wesley Earnest and Luella (Brinegar) Holmes. She graduated from Marion High School in Marion KS, in 1948. She attended Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education in 1952. Bettye earned graduate degrees from Emporia State University, a Master of Science degree with a major in Special Education Learning Disabilities in 1977 and a Specialist Degree in Educational Psychology in 1990. Bettye worked as an educator for more than 30 years. She was very devoted to her students in Atchison County, Emporia, Garden City, Doniphan County and Leavenworth County, and retired as school psychologist from the Leavenworth County Special Education CO-OP in 1993. She was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, the Sweet Adeline’s a cappella singers and volunteered for the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing, crocheting, reading, playing cards, collecting clowns, traveling and especially her grandchildren. Bettye enjoyed singing at church functions as well as weddings.

She was married to Lewis Dell Palmer on August 17, 1952. Mr. Palmer preceded her in death on Jan. 7th, 1983. Survivors include four sons, Curt Palmer, Eudora, KS, Mick, Rick and Greg Palmer all of Lawrence, KS, two grandsons, Ian and Aidan Palmer, Eudora, KS. Her parents, husband Lewis, and two brothers, Wes and Don Holmes, preceded her in death.
