Dorothy Thompson, 90, of Atchison, KS, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016, at Atchison Senior Village.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS, with Rev. Robert Ziegler, officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Wolf Lutheran Church Cemetery south of Robinson, KS. Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran School Grant Fund or Trinity Lutheran Bus Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.
Dorothy was born on November 18, 1925, in Atchison, KS the daughter of J. Ross and Lorene M. (Case) Knowles. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1943 and received her B.A. from Kansas University in 1947. Dorothy accepted a position at Robinson School District where she taught for two years. During that time she met Charles Thompson and after their marriage she joined the Upper Wolf Lutheran Church and became active in circle, teaching, and helping with dinners. Following Charles death she moved to Atchison and joined Trinity Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening, and reading, playing board games and working on puzzles. Dorothy wrote and published three books of poetry and short stories.
Dorothy married Charles E. Thompson on February 5, 1950 in Atchison in the front room of her parent’s home on Santa Fe Street. He preceded her in death on October 26, 1997. Survivors include two sons; Leonard and Sylvia Thompson, Denton, KS, Morris and Mary Thompson, Leona, KS, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren with two great grandchildren on the way.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Velma Knowles and Helen Higley.
